The Long Way Home
Liane Lang created The Long Way Home in 2010 for the Foot Tunnel at Norwood Junction. The work was funded by Croydon Council Art Services to celebrate the tunnel's centenary. The tunnel was built after years of campaigning by the local people who saw their town cut in half by the railway line.
The artist spent several months in South Norwood, exploring its history with local historian John Hickman and meeting community groups and schools. The final images are 180 metres of photographs depicting two walks, which would need to be taken if the tunnel were not there. The North Walk and the South Walk. Along the way, the artist inserted many small references to the area's history. The Art Deco Cinema, sadly demolished, appears as a poster on the wall. In the window of a derelict blockbusters, we see its Victorian original shop front. A suffragette sits by the clock tower, where Ethel Fennings and Mary Pearson once campaigned for women's votes.
The artwork has reached the end of its life and has now been removed. We are currently gauging interest for having it remade in a more vandal proof material, so get in touch if you have a view!
